New York Comic Con 2013 is mecca for cosplayers, and as always, there were some stunning examples of fandom on display this year. Thousands of fans turned out as some interpretation of their favorite characters, from first timers to professional cosplay models. The turnout of “cross-players” at this years Con was especially impressive, fans eschewing gender norms and putting some real creativity into their favorite heroes and villains, crossing boundaries and having fun. Here’s a selection of some of our favorites.
This first time cosplayer was happy to pose for us, saying Loki could be whoever he wants to be and today “he wants to be a girl.”
JACK FROST (Rise of the Guardians)
This cosplayer had one of the best homemade props at the Con. Jack’s staff is not only super realistic looking, it comes apart so it can be carried on the subway!
No photo could do justice (pun intended) to this home-made metallic wing cape, it was so awesome!
CAPTAIN AMERICA
There were several stunning examples of Cap, fully re-imagined as a female hero. (We also spotted a gentleman dressed as a Lady Cap in a dress, but we couldn’t find him afterwords to get a photo.)
IRON MAN, DEADPOOL, AND CAPTAIN AMERICA
Another first time cross-player, who just “really wanted to be Golden Age Flash.” Nailed it!
AXE COP – a personal favorite!
We want to thank all the cosplayers we met and who gave us permission to take their photo and share it with our readers! Everyone depicted here was happy to participate and be celebrated for their creativity at New York Comic Con. Unfortunately, there are still too many instances where cosplayers are not treated respectfully, so this is our reminder: Cosplay is not Consent.
It’s actually gender bending, not crossplay. Crossplay is when you’re female and cosplay a male character. Genderbending is making a male character female.
The only crossplayer is the Jack Frost. The rest are genderbended.
Thank you for the clarification! That makes a lot of sense, and we’ll be more accurate in the future :)
